How Much Does A Washing Machine Weigh? (In KG)

Washing machines have become indispensable appliances in our daily lives. Yet, very few of us give a second thought to buying or installing one. If you do have to replace the washer or install the first one in a new home, one of the most important factors could be its weight.

If you’re wondering how much a washing machine weighs, know that the average top-load washer is about 40 to 60 kilograms.

Front-loading machines are more popular but also a lot heavier, weighing between 60 and 80 kilograms. This is also the average weight of washer/dryer combos.

Why Is Weight Important In Washing Machines?

Understanding the weight of a washing machine before buying it is important for several reasons, including transport, installation and compatibility with your space.

For one, the weight of a washing machine affects its transportability. When moving or delivering a washer, knowing its weight allows you to plan accordingly, ensuring you have the necessary equipment and assistance for safe and efficient transport.

Lighter machines are typically easy to move by yourself or with the help of a mate. However, heavy units may require specialised handling techniques or equipment to prevent the risk of personal injury or damage to the machine.

Weight is also crucial to consider before installation, especially if your space can collapse under a too heavy load.

This might be the case if loft conversions, where the floor can only bear a specific load. The same could happen if you’ve converted your balcony into a laundry area, for example.

Beyond transport and installation, a heavier weight might be beneficial if you want to reduce vibrations.

Most washing machines and especially front-loading models often incorporate concrete counterweights. Their role is to balance the appliance and increase stability during spinning.

Weight can also be an indication of quality. High-quality washers typically have sturdier frames made of steel or other heavy-duty materials.

These materials can impact transport and installation, but they can withstand the mechanical forces generated during the wash cycle, reducing the risk of damage or malfunction.

How Much Do The Different Types Of Washing Machines Weigh?

There are primarily three types of washing machines: front-loading machines, top-loading machines and washer/dryer combos.

Front-Loading Machines

Front-loading washing machines are designed with a door on the front and typically offer larger capacities.

Due to their larger size, they typically weigh between 60 to 80 kilograms, depending on the capacity and additional features.

Top-Loading Machines

Although less common in the UK, top-loading washers offer their own set of advantages. These machines have a lid on the top and are easier to load and unload.

They tend to be lighter than front-loading machines, with an average weight ranging from 40 to 60 kilograms.

Washer/Dryer Combos

These are versatile appliances that combine the functionality of both a washing machine and a dryer. They are especially popular in space-constrained households and typically have a front-loading design.

The weight of washer/dryer combos has an average weight of 60 to 80 kilograms, similar to front-loading machines.

5 Factors Influencing The Weight Of Washing Machines

The weight of washing machines can vary based on several factors.

Understanding these factors will help you make informed decisions when purchasing and installing the appliance.

1. Capacity and Drum Size

Larger capacities and drum sizes generally result in heavier washing machines. The capacity is measured in kilograms and refers to the weight of laundry the machine can handle per cycle.

Higher capacity machines require stronger structures and larger drums, which contribute to increased weight.

Consider your household’s laundry needs and choose a capacity that suits your requirements, whilst also considering the weight implications.

2. Construction Materials

The materials used in the construction of washing machines can impact their weight. Machines with sturdier materials, such as stainless steel or heavy-duty plastics, tend to be heavier.

However, some models may incorporate lighter materials to reduce weight without compromising durability.

It is important to ensure the materials used maintain the machine’s stability and longevity, regardless of their overall heft. The only way to do this is to read the manual and compare different models before settling on one.

3. Additional Features and Technologies

Washing machines with advanced features and technologies may weigh more due to the inclusion of additional components and mechanisms.

Examples of such features include steam cleaning, sensor technology, energy-efficient modes and specialised wash cycles. These enhancements contribute to improved functionality but can add weight to the machine.

4. Brand and Model

Different brands and models have varying weights, even when considering machines with similar capacities and features.

Manufacturers may prioritise different design elements, resulting in the weight variations. Consider researching and comparing different brands and models to find the one that best suits your needs.

5. Energy Efficiency

Energy-efficient washing machines often incorporate insulation and specialised components, which can contribute to increased weight.

While these machines may be slightly heavier, they offer long-term benefits in terms of reduced energy consumption and lower utility bills.

Can You Move A Washing Machine By Yourself?

While it is possible to move a washing machine by yourself, it can be challenging due to its weight and size.

Moving a washing machine alone is not recommended unless you have prior experience and are confident in your ability to do so safely.

It is generally advisable to seek assistance from another person or hire professional movers. Here are the reasons why you should avoid moving the appliance on your own.

  • Weight and size: Washing machines are heavy and bulky, making them difficult to manoeuvre on your own. The weight of a washing machine can range from just under 40 to over 100 kilograms, depending on the model and capacity. Lifting and carrying such a weight alone can pose a risk of personal injury, particularly to your back or muscles.
  • Stability and balance: Washing machines require careful handling to maintain their stability and balance. During transport, the machine can shift, tilt or become unbalanced, potentially leading to damage or accidents. Having another person to help ensure stability and balance is beneficial.
  • Manoeuvring and navigation: Moving a washing machine could involve navigating through doorways, staircases and potentially tight spaces. Having an extra set of hands can make the process smoother and reduce the risk of accidental damage to the machine, your surroundings and yourself.

How To Safely Move A Washing Machine On Your Own

Moving a washing machine by yourself can be challenging due to its weight and size.

However, if you need to do so, here are some steps to safely move it on your own.

1. Gather the Necessary Equipment

Depending on where you want to move the washer, you might need:

  • A furniture dolly
  • Moving straps or ropes
  • Protective blankets or padding
  • Platform or ramp

2. Prepare the Area

When moving a washing machine by yourself, you must clear the pathway to minimise all risks. Remove any obstacles or potential tripping hazards along the route.

You should also secure the drum before moving the washer from its place (unless it is already secured).

To do this:

  • Unplug the washing machine from the electrical outlet and ensure it is completely turned off.
  • Disconnect the water hoses from the back of the machine and ensure the water supply valves are closed tightly. If applicable, detach the drain hose from the plumbing.
  • Identify the drum lock and slide it to the Locked position. Washers without a drum lock typically come with bolts that allow you to secure the drum while moving the appliance. They are usually located at the back of the washer, in diagonal pairs. Tighten them to secure the drum.

3. Protect the Washing Machine

If you only have to move the washer temporarily and on the same floor, you might skip this step.

Otherwise, use blankets or padding to cover the washing machine to prevent scratches or damage during the moving process. Secure the padding with tape or straps.

4. Load the Washing Machine to the Dolly

Pulling or pushing the washing machine may seem like an easy way to move it. However, doing so could result in back injury. You should also avoid lifting the washer by yourself. Instead, use a furniture dolly.

To load the washer, place the dolly near the appliance. Gently tilt the washing machine backward, using your legs and keeping your back straight to avoid injury.

Now, carefully slide the dolly under the washing machine, positioning it beneath the centre of gravity.

5. Secure the Washing Machine to the Dolly

Attach moving straps or ropes around the washing machine and secure them tightly to the dolly.

This will prevent the machine from shifting or falling during the move.

6. Move the Washing Machine

Gently tilt the dolly, then slowly and steadily push or pull it, using the handles to guide the movement. Take care when going over thresholds or uneven surfaces.

If you encounter steps or stairs, use a ramp or a sturdy platform to safely move the washing machine up or down. Take it one step at a time, ensuring a secure grip on the dolly.

Once you reach the desired location, gently lower the washing machine from the dolly to the floor.

Conclusion

The weight of a washing machine depends on the type of washer. On average, top-loading machines weigh between 40 and 60 kilograms, while front-load and washer/combo dryers weigh between 60 and 80 kilograms.

Keep in mind that these are only averages. Your washer could weigh less or more than that, depending on build quality and additional features.
