The older system of washing machine energy efficiency labelling rated machines from D to A+++. The new Label 2020 system rates energy efficiency from G to A. For reference, an A+++ score on the old system scores a meagre E rating on the new system! 

In this energy-efficiency showdown of 2023’s best washing machines, every product listed here scores an A. This means that they’re all very energy efficient washing machines, but that’s not good enough for us. We wanted to find the very best of the best.

How To Compare The Energy Efficiency Of Washing Machines

For every washing machine listed in this guide, we’ve included a link to the washing machine’s official energy specifications. These include niche details, such as whether the washing machine drum releases silver ions during washing, rinsing effectiveness and other sound efficiency measurements.

For brevity, we’ve chosen to focus on  7 energy-tracking metrics:

• Retail Price: compared across multiple UK sites, stated in British pounds.
• Energy Efficiency: measured on a scale from G to A (where A is the best possible rating).
• Energy Consumption: for one cycle, measured in kWh and averaged over 100 cycles.
• Water Consumption: measured in litres per cycle.
• Noise Emissions: measured while the drum is spinning, in decibels (dB).

What’s an Eco 40°C to 60°C Programme?

Rising energy costs and increasing clean water scarcity have pushed many countries to promote energy-efficient washing machines and methods. Eco programmes wash clothing at temperatures between 40°C (104°F) and 60°C (140°F). 

Eco Wash Programmes have been rolled out on all UK and EU-bound washing machines. New laundry washing devices have to have an Eco 40 to 60 programme, by law.

Despite the cooler temperature, using eco or low-temperature programmes could save you up to 90% on your washing machine-related energy bills!

An inbuilt Eco-Power Inverter Motor is responsible for rotating the laundry drum at high speeds. According to Hoover, this is their most energy efficient and long-lasting A-rated motor to date.

This smart washing machine can be paired with a smartphone or tablet via the hOn app (formerly the Hoover Wizard app), allowing you to download over 40 additional wash cycles and stop or start washes remotely.

The app can also scan washing labels and remotely monitor your washing machine’s energy usage in real time! Both Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity are supported. 

The H-Wash 500 is rated to wash up to 9 kg of clothing at a time. A larger capacity variant, called the H-Wash 700, can wash up to 12 kg per load. 

Unfortunately, the Hoover H-Wash 500 comes in just two colours (white and grey). While it is an excellent washing machine, some customers have found the app and additional wash cycles a bit pointless given the machine’s perfectly usable manual operations.

One major downside to this Hoover washing machine is the amount of noise it emits: 80 decibels while spinning. That’s roughly as loud as a hairdryer and around 10 dB louder than most other energy efficient washing machines!

White goods consumers will be familiar with Hotpoint’s ActiveCare range. Other brand’s washing machines add water and detergent to the drum at separate times. ActiveCare washing machines instead froth water and detergent before it’s added to the drum. 

Apparently, this pre-drum lathering increases how deep detergent can penetrate into clothing, making clothes cleaner more efficiently. In recent years, the ActiveCare range has been expanded to include some newer Hotpoint tumble dryers.

The two-tone grey finish is the most popular colour choice, but a solid black-coloured variant is also available across the UK.

To save electricity when not in use, the Siemens WM14NK08GB iQ300 switches itself into energy-saving mode.

If you enjoy the outdoors, the iQ300 could be for you. It has a gentle cleaning for outdoor clothing; the washing machine should remove dirt and soil without wrecking your clothing’s feel and appearance.

The Siemens iQ300 allows you to add textile waterproofing agents, increasing your outdoor clothes’ water resistance without wrecking your machine! 

Siemens also produces the larger iQ500 series; these have a 9kg capacity and retail closer to £700.

While technically only rated for 8kg, the spaciousness of the drum is frequently mentioned in reviews. Like Dr. Who’s TARDIS, it really does feel bigger on the inside!

Despite its size, the 8kg WAN28250GB emits 71dB of acoustic noise on average; this makes it a moderately quiet washing machine. 

According to Bosch, their EcoSilence Drive™ motor is responsible for the low-noise operation. An efficiency-boosting permanent magnet sits inside of the washing machine’s motor, reducing noise emissions on selected wash programmes.

In general, slower spinning speeds (e.g. 200 rpm) will emit less noise than higher speeds (e.g. 1400 rpm). 

To help curb unnecessary water usage, the Series 4 uses so-called ActiveWater Plus technology. Like many washing machines, this means that it weighs the laundry to decide on an appropriate volume of water to use.

Hisense washing machines are instantly recognisable. They feature jet-black doors that hide the laundry inside from sight. This serves no functional purpose, but it’s certainly more eye-catching than most rival washing machines!

It comes with a 2-year warranty as standard and can be delivered to mainland UK addresses from many Hisense retailers. The largest online Hisense washing machine sites include Currys, AO, Argos and Homebase.

Have you ever forgotten to add an item of clothing to a wash? This Hisense model has a “Pause and Add” feature specifically designed to prevent this, simply click the button and once adequately safe, the door will unlock.

If you’re in a hurry, 1kg loads can be washed in as little as 15 minutes using the “15-Minute Programme”. The Hisense WFQA1214EVJM comes with 15 additional wash settings including Dark Wash, Cottons, Baby Steam Care and Allergy Steam.

The Hisense WFQA1214EVJM has a 12kg drum capacity – this puts it among the largest-capacity domestic washing machines available this year!

Unfortunately, it is somewhat loud, clocking in at 78dB while spinning. That’s slightly noisier than similar washing machines, but not enough to be a nuisance.

LG’s Direct Drive (F2V308WSWH) is one of the cheaper,  A-rated energy-efficient washing machines on the market. It has an 8.5kg capacity drum and retails for around £378, dependant on individual LG supplier prices, sales and deal.

Built-in steamers reduce allergens by up to 99.9%; this washing machine is certified by the British Allergy Foundation. It features a metallic programme dial in the top-centre of the machine; this feels sturdier and more pleasant to use than traditional plastic dials. 

The circular dial allows users to pick from 12 washing programmes. These include Eco 40 – 60, Cotton, Sportswear, Mixed Fabric and Baby Steam Care.

Users can then additionally select pre-washing and extra-intensive washing options, for greater control over the entire washing experience.

The LG Direct Drive boasts two unique features not found on rival brand’s machines: AI DD and ThinQ (Wi-Fi).

AI DD is LG’s intelligent fabric care technology. A sensor inside of the washing machine drum detects fabric softness while sensors attached to the outside of the drum measure the laundry’s weight. 

AI DD software embedded in the washing machine uses these measurements to work out the ideal water and detergent dosing for every wash. Supposedly, LG’s AI DD has been trained to accurately identify all common fabrics using deep-learning algorithms.

One major drawback is its relatively low rpm. The LG F2V308WSWH has a maximum speed of 1,200 rotations per minute. That’s low; most washing machines have a maximum rated rpm of 1,400 to 1,600!

Currys has approximately 288 stores dotted around the UK; you’re probably never further than a few miles from a warehouse, meaning you’re eligible for exclusive customer service.

LOGIK washing machines purchased directly through Currys (either online or in-store) qualify for two paid-for services:

1. For £30, Currys will install your washing machine after delivering it. 
2. And for an additional £50, they’ll remove and recycle your old washing machine for you!

With flexible payment options from Klarna, customers can pay for their washing machine in instalments. Pending approval, the LOGIK L914WM23 could cost you just £10.90 per month, paid over 36 months if purchased through the official UK Currys website.

Like most LOGIK-branded washing machines, users can select between 15 different wash programmes by manually rotating a dial.

Despite its affordable nature, the L914WM23 has all of the expected washing machine features built-in, with buttons for controlling wash time delay, spin speed, temperature and child lock settings before starting a wash cycle.

One wash programme of note is the anti-allergy programme.

A built-in steam function automatically sanitises the drum before the start of each wash, ensuring that the washing machine itself doesn’t collect pollen and other allergens over time. Hot steam effectively kills many germs, including odour-releasing bacteria. 

Steam is a safe and natural cleanser, but using the programme too frequently could cause your energy bill to skyrocket. Heating cold water (which enters the washing machine) to boiling-hot steam uses tremendous amounts of electricity.

To be energy-conscious about your electricity usage, use longer and lower-temperature wash programmes.

Miele was founded by businessman Reinhard Zinkann and engineer Carl Miele in 1899. Unlike most washing machine and white goods manufacturers, Zinkann’s and Miele’s families have run the business ever since.

They currently have over 22,000 employees globally, including over 400 staff in the UK.

Thanks to exceptionally high manufacturing standards, Miele washing machines offer excellent washing capabilities. These machines are built to last.

Instead of pushing buttons, the washing machine control panel contains fingertip touch sensors for users to press. The drum has a wavy, textured honeycomb shape.

According to Miele, this keeps a thin layer of water between the metal drum and clothing, preventing wear-and-tear on more delicate items of clothing. 

At 72 dB spinning volume, the Miele WED025 WCS 8kg is among the quietest energy-efficient washing machines.

Additionally, users can use liquid detergents, powdered detergents or cap detergents, thanks to Miele’s support for CapDosing (intelligent dosing) detergent systems.

It features a 10kg capacity drum, located slightly higher-up from the floor than typical washing machines. This makes for stress-free loading and unloading of washing. Many reviews mention how much easier this is on their back!

The RapidO features a striking digital control panel, located top-centre above the front-loading door instead of the more conventional top-left or top-right. 

The Candy RapidO RO14104DWMCE Washing Machine has 16 wash programmes (including Eco 40-60) and can rotate the drum at speeds of up to 1,400 revolutions per minute.

Customers have no colour options to choose from, but Candy does produce a faster-speed, smaller-capacity version titled Candy RO1694DWMCE; this has a 9kg capacity but can rotate clothes up to 1,600 rpm.

The Series 5 Ecobubble was launched in 2021. Samsung then brought a newer version, aptly named the Series 5+, to consumers earlier this year.

Due to its recent launch, we’ve decided to only review the classic Samsung Series 5 Ecobubble – it costs less and has more user reviews online to help accurately compare washing machines.

The Samsung Series 5 Ecobubble comes in two colours: grey and white. It features a typical, see-through front loading door but a somewhat interesting-looking door frame – this is jet-black, contrasting with the machine’s dominant grey or white colour.

A darker door frame probably covers up fingermarks and hard water stains better as well!

We’ve picked an integrated washing machine (HWQ90B416FWB) over Haier’s freestanding washing machines (HW100-B1439N), but don’t worry; the difference in performance and efficiency between the two is negligible!

The Series 4 contains the Haier AquaStop device. This is a water leakage detector located in the feed hose tube.

It will automatically choose the safest option if a leak is detected, alerting the consumer, closing valves and draining various tubes to prevent stress-inducing water leakage from beneath the washing machine.

Users have total control over washing intensity – every wash programme has three increasing wash intensity levels. Which Washing Machine Uses The Least Water?

The washing machines in this guide have a drum capacity of between 8 and 12 kilograms. Bigger drums can fit more clothes but heavier loads increase the amount of energy used. 

To make our comparison fairer, we’ve divided the water consumption per cycle by the drum capacity (which is measured in kilograms). This allows us to compare water use between washing machines of different capacities.

The slowest full-capacity washing machine mentioned here is the Samsung WW10T684DLH Series 7 Ecobubble™. This machine takes 240 minutes (4 hours) to wash a full load of washing.

However, this device does have a larger 10.5kg capacity so it’s not fair to call Samsung’s offering slow – more clothes take longer to wash!
